Movie Review: 'My Mom's New Boyfriend' is Hot!

My Mom's New Boyfriend

⭐⭐⭐

Hey there, Gal Pals (and Guy Pals too),

My Saturday night was spent much like my Friday night this week. I turned to streaming service Crackle for a little free entertainment and stumbled upon a RomCom I'd never seen before. It was a Meg Ryan vehicle called 'My Mom's New Boyfriend.'

Warning: My review below contains spoilers, but the spoilers shouldn't taint your enjoyment of the film!

We all know I'm a RomCom Gal! I love romance, comedy, and the combination of the two. So, this movie seemed right up my alley! Although flawed, 'My Mom's New Boyfriend' was an enjoyable watch. Besides, who wouldn't want Antonio Banderas as their boyfriend? Wowza!

In a nutshell, Meg Ryan plays a woman named Martha who has sort of let herself go over the years while raising her son Henry, played by Colin Hanks (yep, Tom's son). Henry works with the FBI and is sent off on all sorts of secret missions. During one of these missions, his mother is left to her own devices and something happens that causes her to make major changes in her body and her lifestyle. When Henry returns, Martha is now Marti and she's absolutely ravishing. Henry is stunned by the transformation, but he has made a change of his own. He's engaged to a beautiful fellow agent by the name of Emily - played by one of my favorite actresses Selma Blair.

Henry has trouble dealing with his mother's new lifestyle, especially the fact that she has not just one boyfriend but many boyfriends - one of which is younger than he is. In my opinion, if you've got it, then rock it, and Meg Ryan's character was truly rocking it.

During all this, there are attempted art heists going on, led by a team of thieves who just can't seem to get to the job done. One of these thieves is the amazing, handsome, and debonair Antonio Banderas, playing the role of Tommy. At first, we meet Tommy and his crew in Paris attempting to steal a statue from a museum. The next time we see Tommy, he's in Louisiana, at the same location Marty, Henry and Emily are at, enjoying the day and playing with a flying drone. The drone goes off course, whacks Marty in the face and knocks her down. When she opens her eyes again, the first thing she sees is Tommy.

Needless to say, Tommy and Marty hit it off immediately, despite the fact that Henry is a little sick of his mother's recent dating around. The four of them spend time together, go out to eat, and Tommy wins over everyone but the over-protective son.

The next day at work, Henry is at a briefing where he learns a possible art heist is being planned in the city. Up on the screen flashes Tommy's picture. Henry makes it known that Tommy is his mom's new boyfriend, and his superiors appoint him to a surveillance team to listen in on and watch his mother's interactions with the thief to learn more about the upcoming heist. Following this are some really funny moments where Henry overhears much more going on with his mother than he'd like to, and his embarrassment mounts when his co-workers develop the hots for his mother and more than enjoy the things they hear and see.

I won't get into the climax of the film, but let's just say the laughs, action, and drama just keep building until the very end. The highlights of 'My Mom's New Boyfriend' are Meg Ryan and Selma Blair, who pull off their roles with sexy and flawless ease. Antonio Banderas is the perfect handsome love interest and the perfectly flawed thief in the movie. Colin Hanks seemed to struggle a bit with his role as he played the straight man who was the butt of most of the jokes. Even so, it was fun seeing him play the son of the woman who had played his father's girlfriend in other blockbuster RomComs.

While this is definitely not a five star movie, 'My Mom's New Boyfriend' is lighthearted and fun and it is worth viewing on a Saturday night at home. It's campy, quirky, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. At other times, it's worth a light chuckle, but in this day and age, a light chuckle can be priceless. The trick in enjoying this movie is to make yourself get over what a stick in the mud Colin Hanks' character is. At one point, I had to remind myself how he wore a collar and a leash with his underwear and t-shirt and barked at Anna Faris in that episode of 'Mom.' That moment was pure comedic genius for him.

Much love, Jenn 💋
